World over, host cities of large international sports events are including into their mandate, the intent to improve the environmental profile of the region, thus creating awareness of environment and eco-friendliness.
Pune will endeavor to emulate these distinguished cities through the Green Games initiative of the Commonwealth Youth Games 2008.
On Monday, October 22, 2007 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, M.P. & Chairman, Organising Committee, CYG Pune 2008 & CWG Delhi 2010 and Mr. Eric Falt, Director, Division of Communication and Public Information, (UNEP) to support environmental activities that are mutually defined.
Mr. Mark Runacres, Director, TERI was also present on this occasion.
Pune Divisional Commissioner, Mr. Nitin Kareer stressed that the sports city is environmentally friendly and all work being done is as per green construction norms.
The Games will focus on issues like waste management, anti litter campaign, sustainable transport and public awareness programmes.
